About Spark Realm

About Spark Realm

Welcome to Spark Realm! As a long-time ARC fan, and an ARCer for many years, under many names, I made this website solely for the love of the game, and started work on it only a few months before Sierra announced the third and final closing of ARC. Needless to say, I was disappointed that ARC as I knew it would die. However, a new and promising successor called Spark soon came into view.

Throughout the years, great numbers of ARC/Spark's vast community have moved on to bigger and arguably brighter horizons; however, there are still a select few dedicated devotees that make the Spark developer community what it is today. It is for these dedicated few that I created this website!

The History of ARC/Spark

The History of ARC/Spark

The game of ARC has evolved surprisingly little over its long course of history. From TEN to WON to Sierra, and now to Spark, the game of ARC has proven itself as one of the most durable games of all time. Though such a lack of evolution has perhaps been detrimental to its popularity, it has also, no doubt, been the source of its incredible lasting power.

ARC was originally developed by John Vechey (jv) and Brian Fiete (bf), and has been a cult hit since before 1997. It was hosted on a server rented out by Hoopy, and clients ran it via hfront (Hoopy Front End). Jv and bf then took ARC to Total Entertainment Network (TEN) in 1998 for its 1.0 release. About a year later, in 1999, TEN ceased to exist, and ARC disappeared with it.

But in December of 1999, World Opponent Network (WON) acquired ARC, and attempted to make it a source of income, by adding ads into the game's interface. However, this idea never took off, and in 2001, WON also went under.

Sierra Entertainment acquired WON, which also hosted many other popular games, such as Counter-Strike. Sierra's bold move once again allowed ARC to stay alive longer than its owner. ARC was updated a few times by Sierra, but these were only security patches. In 2002, development was handed to a community member called err0r. Due to lack of cooperation from Sierra, no patch was released for years, and after a long time of waiting, err0r resigned his position in 2005, handing leadership of the admin team to Goose, one of the first players of the game, and Sonique, a prominent admin.

In 2007, Sierra Entertainment posted a news release on their website expressing intentions to terminate multiplayer support for several Sierra titles (including ARC) as of August 16th 2007. Fortunately, a player called Remote had begun developing a replacement clone of ARC, which in due time became known as Spark. Remote ran Spark on his Codemallet servers, alongside other games he had developed, Battle City and The Odyssey.

In the beginning, Spark looked and acted almost exactly like ARC, but as time wears on, and as new content is continually being developed by devoted players, Spark is beginning to evolve in new ways of its own.

The Legend of Spark

Speraachus IV: A class 'H' planet in the outer reaches of space, known throughout the charted universe as the one of the richest sources of energy-yielding compounds found yet. The elements found on this harsh world could power the largest of empires until the end of days. This planet is spoken of in reverent tones; it is regarded as near-legend by many, as visitors to its surface are few, and those who return are even less. But mostly, it is known by the nickname given it by its discoverers:

SPARK.

Since records began, those civilizations able to seek it out have travelled far to claim it as their own. Arriving, they found themselves greeted by many other like-minded spacefaring worlds hell-bent on gaining Spark's riches, and just as equally determined to share them with no other. They have met in the virtual consulates, and in the diplomatic chambers, trying by night and day to ratify treaties that will guarantee a share of riches for all. But most of all, they have met on the battlefield, to gain for themselves a treasure with which to build their massive empires...

...and Spark hosts a battlefield like none before...

When first charted, Spark was discovered to have in orbit around it a number of monolithic structures that almost magically impeded the forward progress of the covetous hordes. Early archaelogical surveys that were conducted determined them to be ancient guardians of Spark, set in place there by some long-vanished but technologically advanced race. It soon became apparent that gaining control of these guardians meant gaining control of Spark, and its riches untold. The conflict began.

Using heavily armed and remotely-controlled tanks to fearsome effect, teams of specially trained mercenaries work together to gain control of each guardian on behalf of their power-hungry benefactors. Establishing strategically located control points, the mercenaries need to retrieve and capture the available control orbs. This often required attacks on rival bases, using teamwork and key tactics, and defending the hard-earned orbs was paramount. With such a prize to be won, the coffers of the competing civilizations seem to be limitless, providing an infinite amount of tanks - and weapons with which to destroy those of their competitors.

Only your resolve will dictate the length of your tour of duty.

Can your skills and cunning be what tips the balance of power decisively? Will the heat of your lasers and the support of your teammates be enough to prevail? What hidden mysteries will the guardians reveal as the battle rages?

The riches of the universe are yours to conquer.

Welcome to Spark.
